Devotional for Friday, July 7, 2017 with Dr. Jim Lucas, Pastor of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, Lebanon, PA.
This last week at our church was both exhilarating and reflective. One day our brand new digital sign was put in place, and a few days later, the old sign, the one that had been used for the last 25-30yrs was taken down. Sure, it had once housed it’s own set of lights, reflecting letters slid into ridges so that it could display the information; that one then being replaced by the ‘Grace Point’ wooden, static sign (see pic left side). Now, what remains is a slab on the ground. Powerful. Reflective.
Now, in a new location, nearer the road, stands a new digital sign, capable of being programed on a PC! Amazing. Exhilarating AND reflective. The old AND the new. The old has history. The new is just beginning its own history. Notice I didn’t say old VS new. There is no competition; there is comradry. There is value in the old, and there’s value in the new. There’s a wealth of history to treasure, and there’s new treasures to be gained. Whether you’re 30yrs old, 40, 50…or 90, God places high value in you. You’re an asset to Kingdom ministry. The key lies in hearing God’s heartbeat and being sensitive to what He wants to make new, either in your life, or in your family, or job, or maybe even most particularly in what you do for the Lord.
Our old sign had served its purpose for many years. We were thankful for it. And now we stand facing the future, and know that the new digital sign will lead on in giving our community information. Think of it this way. You’ve had a couch, and over time you’ve needed to replace it. You’ve had refrigerators, stoves, washers and dryers, cars, many things…but there came a time, a need to replace it. Ezekiel 36:26 says this about heart replacement. “I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit in you; I will remove from you the heart of stone and give you a heart of flesh. I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws.” (says our Lord God).
The weight of the value of a person IS MORE than that of a washing machine. (I sure would hope so!!). In the case of the washing machine, when it has served its purpose and is no longer useful, it’s tossed out, scrapped, thrown on a metal junk pile! But we don’t do that with people whom God has created. Every person is valuable for God to use here on earth until each goes home to heaven. We see the beauty of the present through the ‘dignity’ lens of the past.
So what does God want to make new in you? Are there things you need to lay down, as Moses did his staff, so that God can reveal the new, the refreshing, the awakening of His Spirit in you and through you? Nothing in your life has gone unnoticed by God. He has seen it all; knows it all. And as His Word says – “all things work together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.” (Rom 8:28)
If you have asked for the new but don’t see it yet, don’t have a handle on it yet, be patient. You new is being specially packaged for you. God is at work creating the new for you and at the same time valuing everything you’ve gone through up till now. The old AND the new. Praise Him today, friends, for He makes ALL THINGS new. “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come; the old has gone; the new is here! (2 Cor 5:17). Amen.
