God Questions – A pastoral response #2 Is the Bible True?

Devotional for Friday, May 19, 2017 with Pastor Jim Lucas

Our church is going through a series called: The God Questions. I have felt led as a pastor to voice a response to each of these very important questions. The first question: “Is God real?” I answered via my FB page, but not this blog. If you’d like to see/read it, contact me.

These are real questions, asked by people who really want to know the answers. These are life questions, and they deserve life answers. If you know me, you know that I’m a practical believer. I don’t want to just read something in a book some place. I want to know if it can be lived out in real life, and if so, what does that look like? Today’s question is:  Is the Bible true? The glib, quick answer is yes. But I want to tell you why – personally.

THE BIBLE IS A STORY of a GOD-LOVE to every MAN, WOMAN and CHILD:  I’ve seen, and experienced the love of God in my life from start to where I am now. Over and over again, He said He’d love me, sustain me, carry me through, take my sins upon Himself on the cross so I don’t have to. That I’d be pardoned, and made whole. It’s happened. It’s real. He speaks His love to me through every chapter and every verse of the Bible. He said to me personally, “for God so loved Jim, that He gave His one and only Son so that as Jim believes in Him, Jim will not perish but have everlasting life. For He didn’t send Jesus into the world to condemn Jim, but to save Him. Every day I’m grateful. Everyday I feel, sense, know, and appreciate His love for me. His love for me is abundant, huge, undying, unconditional, genuine, wider than the east is from the west, unmeasurable, and I can’t thank or praise Him enough.

IT’S A BOOK of PROMISES. It’s been calculated that there are 5467 divine promises in the Bible, promises that reveal his particular and eternal purposes to which He is unchangeably committed and upon which me and every believer depends. But the qualifier is that I am obedient as a follower of Christ. Just to get you thinking…God is trustworthy (Titus 1:2), unchanging (Ps 110:4), he has the power and will to fulfill His promises (Isaiah 55:11), His promises stem from his goodness and glory (2 Peter 1:3-4). God’s promises are fulfilled in Jesus (2 Corinthians 1:18-20). His promises are received by faith (Galatians 3:22). There are promises for every single, personal need that I have..without question. He has a promise for every need.

IT’S A BOOK of EARTH-LIFE & ETERNAL LIFE.  Jesus said in John 10:10. “I came that they may have life, and have it to the full.” The life that I’ve experienced with Jesus is incredible. It’s one filled with hope, abundance, joy, peace, rest, deliverance, grace, mercy, love, and so much more. He never lacks of what He wants to bless His children with. He knows how to give good gifts to His kids. (Matthew 7:11 – yeah, try this 7/11 store!!)  And so He’s provided for me an abundant life, but also the assurance that as I live for Him, He’s preparing a place for me in heaven right now. And in due time, I will be with Him and all His family.  He will return for His Bride when He is given the OK from His heavenly Father. (Matt 24:36); I Cor 15:52; Luke 21:25-28) Jesus says also in John 10:28 “I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.” This is powerful. This is true. I trust Jesus with my life. He is my life. He is my all. There is only one God, and in Jesus, I trust.

There is only one book that truly matters, only one that in its pages provides every answer I will ever need in life and in death. And that is the precious, inspired, holy Word of God. When I was growing up, we had a saying and it’s one you will hear from my lips because I mean it. “You have my Word.” And when I read the Bible, I hear God saying to me, “Jim, you have my Word on that.”  Amen.
