Devotional for Friday, April 21, 2017
When you meet a person for the first time, the question you’ll ask most often, after you say, “Hi, my name is so & so”, is: “and…What is your name?” There is something very special about your name; their name. A name…it was given to you. It is special and meant for you. It was NOT a mistake.
So, don’t you find it awkward when you can’t remember somebody’s name, and reluctantly, and maybe with some embarrassment you say, “hey you.” Doesn’t feel right, does it? Doesn’t sound right to say anything but their name!
What’s in a name? It’s important to use a person’s name. It identifies who they are. It’s on their drivers license. It’s on their bank account; or school/college lists. When someone says your name, you take notice. Why? because it belongs to you, and you are known by it. Someone needs you, and you are called – by name; your personal name. Your name identifies you. You are recognized by your name. And isn’t a name better than just being called by some random, impersonal number!! Absolutely!
The Word of God talks about many people. 100’s of names are mentioned from Genesis to Revelation. But there is one name that is not like any other. We could mention Moses, or Jacob, or Job. We could mention Sarah, and Ruth, and Mary. But there is a name that is above every name (Phil 2:9). There is a name that when lifted up, every knee shall bow (Phil 2:10). And that name is Jesus! Praise the Lord. When we call on the name of Jesus, what does that really mean? We are calling on a very special name, a personal name that means Savior. When you need a plumber, you call on the name of a skilled plumber. When you need a mechanic, you call on the name of a skilled mechanic. But when you need a Savior, Redeemer, Counselor, or Holy One, you call on Jesus. When you are thirsty, or hungry, or in need of refuge, you call on the Living Water, Bread of Life, the Mighty God, the Lion of Judah, the very King of Kings, you call on Jesus.
What’s in a name? everything. It means everything! And get this. To each and every one of us, we aren’t just a ‘hey you’ to Jesus. He knows each of us by name. Each one of us, individually, are special in His eyes. We’ve been given a new name (Rev 2:17; Rev 3:12; Isaiah 65:15) . Our names are written on the palms of his hands (Isaiah 49:16). I’m telling you, we are everything to God. Jesus speaks our name in prayer to His Heavenly Father, constantly. And best of all, when we ask the question: What’s in a name? the answer? SALVATION. (Acts 4:12) “Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.” In the name of Jesus alone is salvation. Hallelujah!
We praise the name of Jesus; always, because He is the Resurrection and the Life; the Great Shepherd; Prince of Peace; the Bright Morning Star, the Alpha and Omega, and the Beginning AND the End. That’s it! Say His name. Sing His name! Speak it often. Speak it strong and confidently. His name is everything to you and I. It’s a name you never regret saying, and in His name is healing, is joy, is fulfillment, is life abundant and eternal!! Praise His Holy Name!
